What are the challenges nowadays? This is best illustrated by a patient history. A patient came with these words: ‘Ich werde auch diese Herausforderung überleben’ - ‘I will survive also this challenge’. This 46-year-old patient was HIV-infected since 1994 with advanced stage disease. He started therapy in 1999. In 2003, he suffered from acute hepatitis C, which was cured with interferon therapy without any recurrence. In 2005, he was diagnosed with a diffuse tumor of the colon and it was then when he said that he will survive also this third life threatening challenge. He was successfully operated and treated. Since then he is asymptomtic, fully working, without any recurrence.
