Esophagus

Оглавление

Gas passing through the esophagus may be derived from two sources: air swallowing and belching that is the passage of gaseous material from the stomach to the mouth. Nitrogen accounts for approximately 78% of swallowed air. Because little nitrogen is absorbed through the intestine and only about 400 ml of nitrogen is passed in flatus per day, most swallowed air should be eructated subconsciously or consciously [1]. It seems that 2-8 liters of air may be swallowed and eructated per day because of the 2-3 ml of air conveyed to the stomach with each swallow in an adult who usually consumes about 800 g of food and 1.5 liters of water.
