EGO TRIPS
AAs on their favorite subject: themselves
It’s not easy to admit it, but ego often rears its ugly head. AAs—newly sober ones as well as old-timers—like to feel they are important. In “The Best Little Coffeemaker in AA,” a member brings gourmet cookies to his group to show how well he takes care of them, and refuses to ask for help (that wouldn’t look good). In “Pancake King,” the cook at a weekly AA pancake breakfast gets a lot of praise for his efforts and later finds it hard to surrender his spatula; no one else does it quite as well.
It’s only later they can look back and smile at these behaviors. As we learn to love ourselves and focus on helping others, hopefully we don’t need to feel so important. Of course, ego still pops up; as with everything, it’s progress, not perfection.
