CHAPTER THREE

MAY 2007

TWISTED

The lighter side of being new to AA

It’s hard to remember, after several years in the program, how confusing it all was at first—figuring out how to work the Steps, learning what the Traditions mean, dealing with that first “drinking event” without a drink, and starting to relate to and trust other people. Members write about their surprise when they realize no one notices or cares that they’re not drinking, such as in the story, “How to Act at a Party.” Others share about finally finding joy in life. “Among the many things I'd lost by the time I got around to AA was my sense of humor. Now—with fourteen months of dryness and maybe a month or so of sobriety under my belt—some of those things are trickling back,” writes the author of “Funny Things Happen.” The stories in this chapter are about the missteps, discoveries, and lessons learned in the early days.
