5.4. Profile of Key Political Scientists

Оглавление

The most well-known political scientists in China must be Yan Jiaqi (1992) and Wang Hunin. Yan Jiaqi has been in exile in New York since his position on reform and democracy was turned down at the Tiananmen Democracy demonstration. Those close to Zhao Ziyang including Yan Jiaqi largely disappeared from the political scene since 1989. In the process of recovering from the nadir of the Tiananmen Democracy suppression and economic embargo imposed on China, Wang Hunin submitted a vision and policy line persuasive enough to the post-Tiananmen leadership which aspired to realize the rise of China. These team members and their work include: Guo Dingping, Political Party and Government, Cao Peiling, Government and Market, Hu Wei, Intergovernmental Relations, Ren Xiao, Administrative Reforms, Tao Dongming and Chen Mingming, Political Participation. They became the harbinger of Chinese political studies.

In contrast to Fudan University’s organized books, Peking University’s organized series focuses on political development and government reform. They include: Xu Xianglin, ed., Democracy, Political Order and Social Change, Xie Qingkui, Political Reform and Governmental Innovation, Wang Puju, ed., Social Transition and Political Change, Xu Xianglin, ed., Government and Society under Chinese Incremental Reform. Another Fudan University organized book series includes: He Junzhi, The People’s Congress at Country Level, Hu Weijun, The Political Consequences of Unbalanced Developmental Strategy, Zhu Demi, The Political Analysis of the Special Economic Zone in Shenzhen, Guo Dingping, The Governance and Democracy in Shanghai.

Out of all these and other books on Chinese politics came standard textbooks of Chinese politics. Most acclaimed among them are Lin Shangli, The Study of Political Formation in Contemporary China, 2000, Zhu Guanglei, The Governmental Process in Contemporary China, 2002, Yu Keping, Incremental Democracy and Good Governance, 2003.

Chinese political scientists teaching abroad play important roles in the advancement of Chinese political science. Anita Chan, Australian National University, Baogang He, Deakin University, Melbourne, John Zhao Quansheng, American University, Yongnian Zheng, National University of Singapore and Suisheng Zhao, University of Colorado, Boulder, Jianwei Wang, University of Wisconsin, and Hongyin Wang, Syracuse University, are among the most active.
