INDIAN MOUNDS PARK

10 Mounds Boulevard, St. Paul, Minnesota 55106

directions

From downtown St. Paul, take Kellogg Avenue East for a mile until you get to Mounds Boulevard. Follow Mounds Boulevard for about a mile, and it will take you directly into the park. The park will be both on your left and your right.

history

Today, only six Native American burial mounds remain in this park overlooking the skyline of St. Paul. It is thought that within the last 2,000 years, at least 16 mounds were once present in the area. Some of the mounds were simply destroyed by weather and people over the years. Others were excavated in the 19th century. Preservation was not a top priority for excavations during this time period. Today, the six remaining mounds are protected.

The first of the mounds in this area was thought to have been built by the Hopewell culture nearly 2,000 years ago. Later Native American cultures likely destroyed some of the original mounds and built some of their own. Perhaps more than 2,000 years of Native American burials have taken place in this area.

ghost story

Perhaps the most frequently reported paranormal phenomenon in the park is people hearing footsteps walking through the grass near the burial mounds. No matter how hard the witnesses search, no source is ever found for these footsteps.

People also experience intangible feelings of discomfort. Some feel like they are being watched even when there is no one nearby. Others simply feel unwelcome and want to leave. People have also smelled meat cooking and have heard children crying while within this park.

visiting

The park is open until 11 p.m. every day of the week and every week of the year. The best time to enter the park to look for ghosts is after dark. The best places to search are remote areas where not many people are around whom you may mistake for a paranormal entity.
