history

The town of Shakopee, Minnesota, was named after a Dakota chief of the same name. The Dakota tribe once inhabited the land of Shakopee but slowly lost land in deals to the white settlers. By the early 1860s, the Dakota had had enough of the way the white settlers were violating treaties and stealing their land. A band of Dakota rebels killed 800 settlers starting the Dakota War of 1862. Settlers in the Shakopee area were killed during the uprising.
