Water is a polar molecule

Water is a bent molecule, not linear (see Figure 2-1). The hydrogen atoms have a partially positive charge ; the oxygen atom has a partially negative charge . This charge distribution is due to the electronegativity difference between hydrogen and oxygen atoms (the attraction that an atom has for a bonding pair of electrons). The water molecule in Figure 2-1 is shown in its bent shape with a bond angle of about 105 degrees.
