Chapter 1

Thoughts Are Things

“ Let a man radically alter his thoughts, and he will be astonished at the rapid transformation it will effect in the material conditions of his life. “

- James Allen

Thoughts Are Things

James Allen said it best in his book, As A Man Thinketh, when he said, “thoughts are things.” We are exactly where we are today as a direct result of our thoughts. The great news is that if you are not happy with where you are, you can change everything by simply changing your thoughts, which in turn changes your attitudes, behaviors, actions, and results! It all begins in the mind.

Looking at the mega real estate agent, you will find a common trait: they all think on a different level. The objective of this book is to help you discover how the mega agent thinks and how you can begin to create the life and business you want by thinking similarly. This may require you to get out of your comfort zone a bit and take a deep look inside before true change will come about. But remember this, change is a choice. You have the choice right now to change your thinking and change your life. Consider the following quote . . . I am not sure of the origin as I wrote this down in my journal.

“You are in charge of your life. No matter how many different forces there may appear to be which seem to influence or even dictate parts of your life, there are always parts over which you have control. You can increase that control. With that increased control comes increased power. If you decide what it is you want out of your life, you can build a very powerful life. Because you are clear about what it is that you want, you will not accept a ‘cheap substitute’ for a ‘real’ life willingly. You will no longer be easily vulnerable to being sold a bill of goods or being victimized by an oncoming bus. It is your life. Not hers. Or his. Or theirs. YOURS!”

The Mega Agent understands that thoughts are real and they are powerful. The successful agent thinks at a higher level. You are not stuck with the conditioning of your past, nor do you need to allow others to determine your future. I want you to begin thinking at a higher level today. Begin to think good, positive, powerful thoughts. Replace limiting thoughts with those of abundance.

Maybe you remember the picture above? Some look at the photo and see an old witch while others look at the same picture and see a young lady. Which do you see? No matter which it is, shift your focus and you will see the other and experience the “Aha!” experience. When you have a limiting thought pop up, simply replace it with a powerful thought of abundance that will serve you well. It’s just as easy as staring at the picture above and seeing an old witch, then shifting your focus and seeing a beautiful young lady.

Most people fail because they desire to change their results or situation without changing their thinking. Benjamin Disraeli said, “Nurture great thoughts, for you will never go higher than your thoughts.” The mega agent is constantly weeding out negative, limiting, non-serving thoughts and replacing them with positive, powerful, serving thoughts.

I also want to challenge you to begin thinking big. David Schwartz says, “Where success is concerned, people are not measured in inches or pounds or college degrees or family background; they are measured by the size of their thinking.” Start thinking ‘possible’ instead of ‘impossible.’ Unsuccessful agents are always focusing in survival mode. They are living from transaction to transaction. Average agents are focused on thinking maintenance. They are keeping up with the status quo. They are trying to figure out how to just simply maintain their business year to year. The successful agent focuses their thinking on progress. They are constantly thinking how they can move their business to the next level. Everything they do is done with purposeful intent. They are committed to self-mastery and are always thinking of ways to experience a breakthrough in their business.

The successful agent first creates their success in their mind. Then they make it a reality. The truth is that the way we think affects what we do, which affects our relationships and results, which determines our destinies. The cycle begins with a thought. Are your thoughts big and bold, or small and limiting?

Stephen Covey calls this the “First Creation, Second Creation” principle. He says in his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, “Whether we are aware of it or not, whether we are in control of it or not, there is a first creation to every part of our lives. We are either the second creation of our own proactive design, or we are the second creation of other people’s agendas, or circumstances, or past habits. It’s a principle that all things are created twice, but not all first creations are by conscious design. In our lives, if we do not develop our own self-awareness and become responsible for first creations, we empower other people and circumstances outside our circle(s) of influence to shape much of our lives by default.”

What you achieve is going to be determined by what you are, just like the root of a tree determines the fruit of the tree. You would never expect to see oranges growing on an apple tree would you? So why would you expect to get different results by doing the same things over and over that have proven to get you the exact results you do not want. Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity was, “doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.” What thought seeds are you planting? If you are consistently planting seeds of doubt, failure, negativity, and fear, you can’t expect to reap a harvest of success and abundance.

If you’re going to give more attention to one thing than you do all others, give attention to the roots, and not the pursuit of the fruit. Give attention to your thoughts, for that is the root of where it all begins. Your mind is like the soil in a graden. The soil does not care what seeds are planted. The soil or mind will nourish good seed (thoughts) or bad seed (thoughts). You have to constantly weed out the negative thought seeds growing in your mind so they don’t have time to grow. Give all your attention to the good thoughts that serve you. Allow your mind to nourish those good thoughts that will manifest themselves into the results you desire.

I would like to close this chapter with an excerpt from Jim Rohn’s book, How To Have Your Best Year Ever. Even though this was written before the year 2000, it still applies.

“What’s it going to be like in the year 2000? It’s going to be about the way it’s always been. Aren’t you glad I shared that with you? It’s not everyone who gets to hear this. The tide comes in and then what? It goes back out. It’s been that way for at least 6,000 years of recorded history. It gets light and then what? It turns dark. The next season after fall is -? Winter, of course. Every time, without fail, for at least 6,000 years. It isn’t going to change. Six thousand years of recorded history reads like this: opportunity mixed with difficulty. It isn’t going to change. “So,” you ask, “how will my life change?” When you change!

Change your thinking and you change your life!

Empty Cup, New Tea

Before we begin on this journey to change your mindset, I want to share an ancient Chinese proverb I read once that said, “Empty cup, new tea.” This proverb simply meant that if you wanted to make room for new tea, you had to empty what was already in your cup. What’s the point of this proverb? If you want to experience a breakthrough in your business and make some significant changes in your mindset and therefore results you receive, then you must identify what you’re willing to pour out so you can make room for the new.

This is also known as the Law of the Vacuum. You have to get rid of the old to make room for the new. I have two boys and each year we clean out their rooms. They never want to take on this task! But usually before Christmas, I tell them they need to make room for the new. They know what this means and it’s funny to see how fast they will jump up and begin identifying what they want to keep and what they’re willing to let go of.

It’s no different in life. We have to constantly make room for the new tea by emptying our cups. Everyday ask yourself, “What do I need to let go of to make room for this change?” What are you willing to sacrifice to make room for the new? Maybe you want more listings. Are you willing to let go of some free time right now in the evenings to go on more appointments? Are you willing to pay now so you can play later? John Maxwell says it best, “Play now, pay later or pay now and play later.” With every success, there is some level of sacrifice.

Sometimes it’s not even about learning new ways of doing things as much as it is about unlearning old habits and ways. We are all creatures of habit and we resist change at all costs. Even good change frightens many people. So before we begin this journey, what habits are you willing to unlearn? Are you willing to replace those habits with better ones that serve you? This is a difficult task. Many times unlearning old habits is harder than learning new ones.

To make room for this new way of thinking and doing, you need to be ready and willing to identify what you need to pour out of your cup so this new tea will fit in your cup.

What needs emptying? What is constantly getting in your way and holding you back from reaching your full potential? Are you willing to pour it out? Are you willing to completely empty your cup so you can make room for the new?
