May

Оглавление

1 May, May Day, Padstow. Padstow is the setting for the region’s most famous May Day celebrations when one of the town’s local men is given the dubious honour of donning a strange black, white and red costume to become the Obby Oss (‘Hobby Horse’), the centrepiece of the town’s centuries-old fertility rite. See here.

First Week, Flora Day, Helston. Elaborately costumed couples twirl through the streets performing the Furry Dance (or Floral Dance) to celebrate the coming of Spring. See also here.

First Week, World Pilot Gig Championships, Isles of Scilly. These popular rowing boat races featuring teams from across the Southwest have been held for more than a quarter of a century (www.worldgigs.co.uk).

Early–Mid May, Daphne Du Maurier Festival, Fowey. A week of events loosely themed around the local author – comedy, readings, exhibitions, dance performances etc (www.dumaurierfestival.co.uk).

Mid May, Bath International Music Festival, Bath. Over two weeks of concerts at venues across the city. See here

Late May–early June, Bath Fringe Festival. Though much less well known, Bath’s fringe festival is the country’s biggest after Edinburgh. Expect lots of comedy, theatre, dance and street performance (www.bathfringe.co.uk).
