Path of Least Control
“Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me; by your trust and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.”
(Psalm 25:4–5)
The hardest part for me when we hit this “infertility bump in the road” was that I had absolutely no control over the issue. I tried to take control by eating the things I should, taking the supplements suggested, and seeking medical treatment, but none of this worked. When we left the fertility efforts behind and started our adoption journey, I felt relief in knowing this process was something more in my control; or so I thought.
When we started the adoption process, I wanted to proceed with the easiest and shortest route. I read all the books and planned our course of action. We signed up with an adoption agency for support and education while we simultaneously worked with adoption lawyers to cover all our bases and quickly get our profile to expectant mothers. Each time an opportunity came our way, I would try to take it, make it mine, and make it work.
Multiple times we faced situations that were not ideal and led to a closed door. These closed doors came in the form of an expectant mother who miscarried before we met her and an expectant mother, whom we met and connected with, but chose another family. There was also an expectant mother who chose us then changed her mind one week before birth. It took almost a year in that process before I realized I was trying too hard to remain in control.
God’s path may not always be the easy path or the short path, but it is the straight path. We have many paths available with forks in the road, uphill struggles, and downhill battles. Our Heavenly Father is waiting to guide us in the right direction. He does not promise an easy and painless journey, but he does promise to lead us and make our paths straight.
Wait with Hope
Is there a particular part of your journey in which you continue to try the easy or short path?
What sorts of things are getting in your way on this path?
Prayerfully consider another path, that although may seem longer, may be blessed and straightened by God.
