What is Lucid Dreaming?

Оглавление

Simply put, when you know that you are dreaming, that is a lucid dream. Everybody has lucid dreams sometimes, but you can also learn to put yourself into a lucid dreaming state.

When you find yourself dreaming and something happens that makes you question if the dream is real or a dream that is lucid dreaming.

Lucid dreaming is defined by being aware that you know that you are dreaming, you do not necessarily have to be able to control your dream for it to be a lucid dream, you just have to have the ability to recognize that you are dreaming.

Many people think that lucid dreaming is the same as controlling your dreams and that is not true.

We can often control our dreams, even when we do not know that we are dreaming. Dream control can happen without our conscious effort, just as lucid dreaming can.

Our unconscious mind can help control the dream and we do not even realize that we are shaping our own dreams because we do not know that we are dreaming.

We can control our dreams consciously, and to do that, we are usually in a lucid dreaming state. The two are connected but not the same. Just as you can learn to have lucid dreams, you can learn to control them as well.

However, it is possible to consciously, or unconsciously, control our dreams without entering a lucid dreaming state, which means that you do not need to recognize that you are dreaming to be able to direct your dreams.

Is it easier in a lucid state, yes, because you know that you are dreaming. Often, people find themselves dreaming and something so improbably happens when they realize that they are dreaming and then they discover that they can actually control parts of their dreams.

If this has happened to you, you know why this is exciting. In life, so much happens that we cannot control so to be able to have some control over our dreams, it is liberating and that is why learning how to make your dreams lucid dreams and to learn to control them is so popular.

Lucid dreaming is a natural state; you wake up, but only in your dream. Your body is asleep, but your brain, because it is already in a highly active state, thanks to REM sleep, is able to recognize that you are dreaming and instead of being a viewer of your dream, you become an active participant in your dream.

Lucid dreaming has been around for a very long time, thousands of years actually. However, the term lucid dreaming is relatively new, and it became the term that people now used to describe that type of dreaming with. Lucid dreaming became popular in the 1960, when it was pointed out by somebody that we could become self-aware in our dreams.

Despite the fact that Tibetan Monks have practiced this for thousands of years, the scientific community was doubtful. However, a doctor at Stanford was able to prove that lucid dreaming was a fact.

People tend to think of lucid dreaming as being new age and/or something that is not real. That is not the case; historically, lucid dreaming has been used by many cultures, not just the monks.

Scientists now understand the sleep cycle and how REM sleep functions and that lucid dreaming is just regular dreaming with the awareness of dreaming.

So, if you are aware that you are dreaming, does that mean you can hurt yourself by trying to act out your dreams? No, because we are programmed to dream, our body has built in safety measures to keep us from hurting ourselves when we dream.

Imagine the disaster if whenever we were dreaming, we acted on it. When we sleep, our bodies go into a sleep paralysis, so that we are immobile while dreaming.

Some people do sleepwalk, but sleepwalking does not occur during REM sleep, when our brains are active and we dream; we sleepwalk during stage three or four.

Why is lucid dreaming important? There are many reasons why it is important to be able to enter a lucid dreaming state, other than for the sheer fun of it. Yes, it is an escape from the stress of daily life, but that is not the only reason why lucid dreaming can be so valuable.

Our dreams are usually the product of our subconscious mind, so when we dream, it is put together by things that our mind creates, from our experiences and our thoughts and our perceptions.

Through lucid dreaming you can learn to face your fears in a safe environment, explore your own emotions and thoughts through your dreams, helping you to better understand your subconscious mind, you can help increase your creativity and problem solving, and you can help figure out who you are, getting a better sense of your own self.

This is why lucid dreaming is so important, it goes way beyond just being fun, and it is useful as well.
