Üks mu lemmikjutte lapsena oli lugu väikesest poisist, kellel oli maagiline pudrumasin, mis tootis nii metsikult putru, et uputas linna kolmejalase pudrukihi alla.
Et kõndida ühest majast teise või mööda tänavat edasi, pidi kaasa võtma suure lusika, süües endale teed vabaks kas lähema või kaugema eesmärgini.
Vaimustav idee, kuigi ma kujutlesin hoopis tomatisuppi koos suure hulga krõbeküpsistega. Nii et lähed seiklema ja võtad samal ajal osa pidusöögist!
Kujutlen, et väikese poisi nimi selles jutus oleks pidanud olema Isaac Asimov. Sest mulle tundub, et alates meie esmakordsest kohtumisest Esimesel Maailma Ulmekonventsioonil New Yorgis 1939. aastal juuli alguses on Isaac rännanud ja pidutsenud läbi elu, kord astronoomiatabelitega, kord teiste teadusvaldkondadega, ja siis jälle ilukirjandusega, ja nii väga pika aja jooksul. Teda võiks nimetada harakalikuks, kuid see pole õige. Harakad otsivad ja haaravad säravaid asju, mis midagi ei kaalu. Isaac armastab mägedega tegeleda, aga ta mitte ei liiguta neid, vaid sööb need ära. Ulata talle raamat, ja paar tundi hiljem on Isaac end sellest läbi töötanud, just nagu ülalnimetatud pudrust, ikka veel näljasena. Kas on mingisuguseid teadusalasid, mida ta poleks tahtnud erialase kirjanduse abil endale selgeks teha? Ma tõsiselt kahtlen selles.
Ja nüüd siin, selles raamatus, on meil Asimovi auväärsed pojad ja tütred. Nende masinad ei pruugi amokki joosta ja linna üle ujutada, kuid nad toodavad sellest hoolimata, ja vaatavad Papa Asimovi ja meie poole, oodates heakskiitu, millega me muidugi kitsid ei ole.
Kui midagi juurde lisaksin, siis märkaks keegi, et ma olen Isaaci kõrval nagu mutt kindluse või loodusjõudude kõrval. Märgin veel vaid üht asja. Räägitakse, et Isaac oli töönarkomaan. Rumalus. Ta on armastusega kündnud kümneid tosinaid territooriume. Ja on veel paar tosinat künda jäänud, kui Isaac lahkub meie juurest ja jõuab Sinna Üles, et kirjutada kakskümmend viis uut loomisraamatut. Ta saaks sellega hakkama nädala jooksul!
Ühel ööl kaks aastat tagasi nägin unes, et olin Isaac Asimov. Alles järgmise päeva lõunaks suutis mu naine mind veenda, et ma ei kandideeriks presidendiks.
Suur tänu, Isaac. Suur tänu, Isaaci lapsed, kes te selles raamatus sõna võtate.
