Repurposed

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

I sat on the floor of the living room, staring at the loveseat. It had seen better days. The left arm hung slackly, the cushions were crushed and it sat forlorn and forgotten in the corner. Now an eyesore in the crowded room, I contemplated the feat of dragging it to the road to be hauled away and destroyed. As I looked at it longer, as strange as it may be, I pitied the tattered piece of furniture. Maybe I would tow it to the sunroom and use it there; I knew better, it would have the same fate. I stood, ready to begin the task.

As I gripped the arm and began to yank an idea sprang into my mind. I looked from the loveseat to the couch and back again.

I wondered if my crazy idea would work.

I went to the laundry room and rummaged through my toolbox. I returned to the living room with my jigsaw, power cord and safety glasses.

The jigsaw hungrily munched through the wood of the loveseat. Sawdust spilled out onto the floor and swirled in the air tickling my nose. Finally, I cut the last bit and the arm hit the floor with a thud. I knelt and looked inside. It seemed that everything else was sound. I pushed the maimed seat to the couch, using the flap of material left by the dissected arm; I wrapped the stump and guided the two pieces together.

Success! Now I had a sectional sofa.

Repurposing items is something I have come to enjoy quite a bit. There is so much beauty, joy and satisfaction in taking an old, discarded piece of furniture and giving it new life and purpose. Much like what God through His Son did for me. I was lost, damaged, crushed; some may have thought I was beyond help or use, but not God. Just like that loveseat, He saw a purpose for me. He excised the broken part, healed me, forgave me and brought me to join with the body of Christ. Once that loveseat joined with the couch, it became a new piece of furniture.

I became repurposed for God through the restoration of Christ’s blood.

No matter the damage, condition, age, or even the appearance will deter the Master from the desire to give new purpose and life to any that ask. You can never be beyond the help of the Master Carpenter’s hand.
