Driving home with Mia, my mind was filled with Robert and Louise. Their grief was enormous. Even though she hadn’t been able to make contact with Anne, Mia had reassured them that she was okay and that they would meet again. At the end of it, they seemed soothed, softened. How had she helped them? What was it that she had done?

She was a bereaved parent – she was able to connect with them, parent to parent. But she had some other quality – she allowed deep emotions to be expressed. She was not embarrassed by big feelings; on the contrary, she was matter of fact.

Robert and Louise had been at their most vulnerable and exposed. I had never seen people so raw. They had opened up so much. Mia clearly had something, but what was it? She seemed to have the ability to make people feel it was alright to be vulnerable – to be seen as they really were.

I asked her, ‘Were you disappointed you didn’t contact Anne?’
