Learner Profiles

Part of becoming a self-advocate for your education involves understanding yourself as a learner. In their book How to Personalize Learning (2016), Barbara Bray (@bbray27) and Kathleen McClaskey (@khmmc) shared ideas for developing learner profiles for students. These learner profiles were checklists of descriptors designed to help students self-identify their strengths, needs, and interests. Students would fill out these checklists and then write summaries about what they learned about themselves.


LEARNER PROFILE TOOL

Since the release of their book, Bray has worked with teachers who have adapted the original Learner Profile Tool to use in their own classrooms. Based on feedback and more research, she recently updated the Learner Profile Tool to reflect Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and a student’s “why” for learning (Bray, 2019).
