Moving Forward …
ОглавлениеSLCs are a way to leverage the collective wisdom of the group to ensure deep learning. To function, they require well-designed experiences and tasks that engage learners in academic discourse, provide the right amount of challenge and the necessary motivation, and allow students to connect with and relate to other members of the team. These tasks also need to be engaging for every team member.
It's a tall order, but it's absolutely within every teacher's power. Transforming the collaborative tasks you assign to support a student learning community begins with reflecting on past collaborative learning experiences and tasks and how students responded to them.
The following questions are a good place to start, and you can use them going forward to monitor interactions in your classroom and inform your task design decisions.
1 Did your collaborative teams find meaning in their learning and bring their individual meaning to the understanding or completion of the task? How do you know?
2 Did each individual member, and thus the collective group, remain engaged in the learning, even when experiencing a challenge? How do you know?
3 When encountering a challenge, did your groups maintain their shared agreement of success without compromising or lowering those criteria for success? How do you know?
4 Were all members of every group able to leverage their skills, expertise, and background knowledge toward the understanding or completion of the task? How do you know?
