ATTITUDES AND GOALS

Stuart and Frank are now teenagers approaching the end of their high school education and they are both planning to further their education at university.

Take a look at the illustration and see how Stuart and Frank have developed attitudes which are poles apart. Stuart has developed what could be described as a pleasant attitude, whereas Frank’s attitude is unattractive to others and this will not help him to improve his results.

Each of us shapes our own life, and this is determined to a great extent by our attitude. The good news for Frank is that attitude is something that can be changed, and by learning how to do this Frank could have greater control over what’s going to happen in the future. Until Frank discovers what attitude is and how to change it, he will have a roller coaster ride on the ride of life, experiencing many failures with the occasional success along the way.

Goal achievers like Stuart know what attitude is. Stuart has started to define a number of personal goals in his life. He is a keen tennis player and he has set himself a goal to win the school’s senior tennis championship next summer. Frank’s only goal in life is to get by, or just drift along, like pebbles on the bottom of the ocean, moving aimlessly wherever the currents take them. With a lot of effort, which he doesn’t find easy, Frank hopes to go to university.

Frank has recently begun to drift into bad habits and hangs about in a bad neighbourhood. He’s unhappy most of the time. He’s hoping things will get better when he gets to university, away from the family home and he’s able to live the way he wants to. Frank begins to adopt the, “I’ll be happy when …” approach to life. But like a ship without a rudder in rough seas, Frank has no goals or direction in life, and unless he changes Frank will go from bad to worse, being tossed about at the mercy of the sea of mankind.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESS…

Go to your quiet place and meditate on the following two questions for at least half an hour.

1.How would I describe my attitude?

2.What are my personal life goals?

Don’t be dismayed if you struggle to come up with answers to these two questions or if the answers are not to your liking. I’m asking you to think about these things now because in the second part of this book you will learn how attitude and goals can work together to transform your life.
