Firelight and candlelight are the most natural forms of ‘artificial’ lighting. The dancing flames of a fire or the flicker and glow of a candle bring a special quality that is impossible to replicate with lamps. With firelight, it’s the campfire security thing that reassures us that we are safe from the creatures of the night, and with candlelight it’s the romantic glow that reassures us that we may not be safe from the creatures of the night!

We have grown a little unfamiliar with the risks of using fire for light, however, and candles, oil burners and real fires need care and attention if they aren’t to lead to accidents. Naked flames need positioning carefully and treated with some respect, so give some thought to what may be above a candle or an oil burner before you light it – a wooden shelf, a curtain? They may seem out of reach, but the heat alone from the flame could blacken them or, worse, ignite them, even without its touch.
