CHAPTER 1 Hallelu-JA

A “New Halleluja” For A New Consciousness

A “NEW HALLELUJA” FOR A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS

What do I mean by a “New HalleluJA”?

The question should be: what was meant by the old HalleluJA? It means praise God. Many Christian hymns and prayers end with the acclamation HalleluJA… praise to God. It suggests jubilation and celebration. I translate it as enthusiastic gratitude!

Why give it a new meaning when it has been around for a long time and used in ceremonies that give praise and jubilation? There is nothing wrong with that surely?

For the past ca 5.000 years we have lived under the guidance and teachings of the patriarchy. That means all our conditioning since then has come from the male collective or male dominance. This is just the way it was. We have, however, internalized male philosophies, male religious instructions, male social conditioning etc. Now we are looking at another possibility not that of returning to the matriarchy, but rather the possibility of building together a New Consciousness from the ashes of the old that includes female and male wisdom.

It is time to rename the sacred, the divine in our daily lives, as a way of becoming more consciously involved with the mystery in each precious aspect of life. Can we celebrate the sacredness of children’s voices, of dance, of our feeling hearts, our emotions, of making love? This is all part of the “New HalleluJA” of living and loving.

The “New HalleluJA” is saying: give thanks not to an ethereal being in the sky but to the sacred, the beauty in each other, in nature, in life with its triumphs and grief. It says: do not wait until Easter to sing HalleluJA; sing it now, today and rename what is sacred in your life. It may even be a healed hurt or an old hatred that has become a blessing. It is saying: you do not have to believe in God to sing. Believe in your own ability to co-create something beautiful and uplifting and be a co-creator with all. Our collective consciousness is the mystical body of the divine. The new HalleluJA is saying, wrap your own arms around your own heart and bring out the parts as yet unlived, unloved.

When we said HalleluJA in the past we offered praise to the God of our fathers. I have asked many people the question: “Do you believe in God and if so, tell me about your belief.” Some of the answers came from the Christian catechism, such as “I believe in God because He sent his son to save me” or “I believe in God because He helps me” or “I believe in God because He is my father in heaven” etc. Each time I was amazed at the way the old religion with its emphasis on gender and relationship through fear still permeated people’s lives in the 21st. century. I was saddened that the old patriarchal God still held power over people. Other people, who had left tribal religion answered, that God is a being of love, a source of healing etc. I was surprised when a seven-year-old boy answered me, “God sends us love from heaven and sometimes when it gets to us it is all gone.” His mother had died and he was trying to make sense of the belief that God is love. What I heard him say was: God is love but when that love filters through the many interpretations and conditionings it gets diluted.
