Tip 22 Sort, Organize and Clean Out a Drawer

Оглавление

Every kitchen has a variety of drawers and sometimes it feels like most of them have turned into junk drawers. Now is the time to sort one drawer at a time. Since the notorious “junk drawer” can seem overwhelming, I’ve dedicated the next tip (Tip 23) to just organizing the junk drawer. This 10-Minute Tidy focuses on all the other drawers in the kitchen, one at a time.

Perhaps you want to start with the silverware drawer since this is the one that gets used every day. Hopefully you are using a silverware holder that easily accommodates all of your daily utensils. I love the expanding silverware trays that fill the entire drawer. You can purchase these at most large household supply stores. They are also great in another drawer for your serving and cooking utensils.

When cleaning out a drawer, you may want to dump the entire drawer out onto the counter so that you can clean the bottom of the drawer. Perhaps you want to put in new contact paper or line the drawer with something to prevent the organizing tray from sliding around when the drawer is opened and closed.

Once the drawer is wiped out and the silverware tray or your organizing bins are in place, decide what you want to put back in. Only keep the utensils that you use. Anything that has been chewed up by the garbage disposal or melted on the stove is trash. There is nothing worse than eating something smooth and creamy like ice cream and then having the jagged edge of the spoon scrape your lip! Throw those away right now! They cannot be fixed and unless you remove them from the kitchen, they are just going to be kept in circulation.

Also, evaluate how many of each item you really need. How many spatulas does your family use in a week? How many potholders do you really use per meal? Why keep more than two sets of tongs unless you entertain often? Just keep the items you love to use. I have an adjustable can opener from my Gram that I absolutely love, so even though the paint is peeling off the handle, it works just as well as it did 40 years ago.

So, keep what you love to use; throw out anything scraped, melted, or broken, and donate all the extras. You will have an organized kitchen, one drawer at a time.
