‘Excuse me, can you tell me where to find Leni Lomond?’ The enquirer sounded anxious and agitated.

‘Second cubicle on the left,’ a male voice replied.

Suddenly, the curtain burst open and in tumbled Stu and Trish. They took one look at me and their faces fell. I must have looked like quite a sight. Thankfully, the X-rays had revealed that my nose wasn’t broken, but it had received a mighty bang, and already the black circles were beginning to appear under my eyes. By tomorrow I’d look like my hot date had consisted of ten rounds with Ricky Hatton.

My right arm was already in plaster, encasing the wrist that had snapped like a twig when my weight, together with the collective might of three members of the Slough bingo squad, had landed on it.

Those bloody heels. Daniel and I had been leaving the pub when he’d made a gallant, chivalrous semi-lunge to open the door for me, a sudden act that–given the vertiginous heels–had forced me to hit the deck like I’d been shot by a sniper. Unfortunately, three large ladies had chosen that moment to leave, rushing to catch the 8 p.m. sitting at the Gala bingo, and it had deteriorated into a pile-up situation.
