What is it about drummers?

Drumming: one of the oldest forms of communication known to man. That and smoke signals. As such it holds a fascination that sets it apart from other musical instruments. Some would say it’s a solid, down-to-earth choice of instrument. You can always rely on someone who plays the drums.

Apparently not. There has long been a kind of universal understanding that drummers are essentially mad. Or if not completely mad, at the very least eccentric. Of course, there are notorious drummers who have in no small measure helped to make this a much-deserved reputation but, that aside, the assumption that the drummer’s always the mad one seems to be something that comes from a deeper sense of awe. It’s as though the notion is inspired by the drums themselves.

Naturally, all this becomes confused with other influences like over-indulgence in booze and drugs. These are by no means confined to drummers, but nevertheless can have a colossal effect on a drummer’s reputation…
