Final Thoughts

Оглавление

Entire books have been written about the importance of developing relationships in schools and the impact those relationships have on learning. Because assessment is an essential component of learning, it makes sense that this book's focus on developing better assessment practices that consider the whole child should begin with a discussion of relationship building.

Relationships lay the groundwork for how we develop learning spaces. Simply put, if we don't take the time to build the various essential relationships that make schools tick, then we greatly hinder our ability to do our jobs well, regardless of which role we have—student, teacher, leader, parent/caregiver, advocate, and so on. In building these important relationships, we will learn what success means for individual students. Knowing what they require to be successful and how best to address areas in need of improvement will enable us to develop more effective and personalized assessments. We should be aiming for students to develop mastery in the skills related to our courses as well as the content they will need as building blocks for future learning. The more developed our relationships are, the more willing students will be to share challenges, take risks, and engage with their own learning, eliminating fear as an impediment because they know we have their best interests in our hearts.
