Mutual Empathy

Оглавление

In 1981, the concept of mutual empathy was added to the RCT model to emphasize the reciprocal nature of connection and the empathy necessary for therapeutic growth (Jordan, 2018). In relationships, including the counseling relationship, each person has an impact on another (Singh & Moss, 2016). As such, an RCT counselor acknowledges and openly expresses that they empathize with a client and are affected by the client’s experience (i.e., “when you talk about losing your best friend to cancer, I am deeply saddened”). As a result, the client understands their impact, grows in connection, and reduces feelings of isolation (Duffey & Somody, 2011). This understanding of mutual connection through cocreated, mutual empathy is the foundation of a growth-fostering relationship (GFR) and a start to repairing past relationships and experiences of disconnection.
