Chapter 2
The Open Systems Interconnection Specifications
ОглавлениеThe Following CompTIA Network+ Exam Objectives Are Covered in This Chapter:
5.0 Industry standards, practices, and network theory
5.1 Analyze a scenario and determine the corresponding OSI layer
● Layer 1 – Physical
● Layer 2 – Data link
● Layer 3 – Network
● Layer 4 – Transport
● Layer 5 – Session
● Layer 6 – Presentation
● Layer 7 – Application
5.2 Explain the basics of network theory and concepts
● Encapsulation/de-encapsulation
● Modulation techniques
● Multiplexing
● De-multiplexing
● Analog and digital techniques
● TDM
In this chapter, we're going to analyze the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. I'll thoroughly describe each part to you in detail because it's imperative for you to grasp the OSI model's key concepts. Once solidly equipped with this vital foundation, you'll be set to move on and build your own, personal storehouse of networking knowledge.
The OSI model has seven hierarchical layers that were developed to enable different networks to communicate reliably between disparate systems.
Because this book is centering upon all things Network+, it's crucial for you to understand the OSI model as CompTIA sees it, so I'll present each of its seven layers in that light.
I'll also provide you with an introduction to encapsulation, which is the process of encoding data as it goes down the OSI stack. I'll finish this chapter by covering important modulation techniques.
