New approaches are recognizing the different needs of each sport, sporting position, and sportsperson. These approaches take into account the different energy systems involved, as well as individual metabolic differences and adaptations to the different physiological demands. Furthermore, there are practical dietary constraints that need to be taken into consideration when planning diets for different events (24-hour swims, adventure racing, sailing). As a result, nutrition intervention is now becoming more specific with very different messages even for a sprinter, a middle-distance runner, a marathoner and an ultra-marathoner.
