MASTER ATHLETES GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

Оглавление

With the knowledge that exercise delays the ageing process and improves health, the number of older individuals participating in regular exercise is on the increase. The ageing process is accompanied by many physiological changes that affect nutritional needs (see table opposite). In addition there are other factors to consider in an older person, such as chronic degenerative diseases (for example, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus), decreased sensitivity to taste and smell, decreased appetite, and increased use of medication, which may affect nutrient absorption. Fluid needs are increased due to a loss of thirst sensitivity and a delay in the sweat response. Thus older athletes need to be more aware of their fluid requirements during exercise.
