Regulating automated decision-making requires acquiring, at least, a minimum understanding of the ways in which big data and data processing technologies work. This chapter offers a general overview of the technologies used in automated data processing and decision-making with regard to groups and individuals. A brief summary of some applications in which algorithms are used is also carried out with the objective of showing the extent to which these systems have penetrated our societies and affect individuals. Some of the controversial cases regarding the use of automated decision-making systems are also addressed. The final part of the chapter is dedicated to discussing the different types of algorithms and the purposes they can serve. The purpose of this chapter is thus to set the scene on which this work is built by explaining the technologies that are the object of this study.
