On Thursday, I booked a ticket to Hawaii.

I love Hawaii, despite the fact that too many memories are associated with Alen.

Oh Alen, why did we have to complicate our lives? After all, everything was so perfect, too perfect to be true.

* * *

Two years ago I flew to Hawaii with Sue.

We were making fun of ourselves and telling that it was our honeymoon without our husbands, although none of us had a date for the last half a year.

These kinds of jokes are typical for me and Sue, and yet sometimes, we need no words as we understand each other even without them.

It was our dream to afford a vacation in Hawaii.

And now, when I had my well-paid job in one of the biggest and best real estate agencies, and in addition I was very successful, I decided to make a special gift for Sue’s birthday and invite her for the vacation.

Here we are, coming out of the airplane and the first feeling we had, was how the warm humid air cuddles us and envelopes down to the lungs.

At the baggage pick-up section, we were welcomed by the Hawaiian dancing girls, who at the end of the dance gave to all the travellers a necklace of lovely smelling flowers. It’s a peculiar kind of their own way to show their hospitality to the visitors, and their own way of sending a greeting message to all the people who arrive from all over the world and speak different languages.

The Hotel “Four Seasons” was one of the best on the whole island. I booked a suit room, which could easily accommodate six people.

The day tended to an afternoon, when we arrived at the hotel. Having unpacked the suitcases and taken a shower, we made ourselves nice.

It took about two hours, and when we felt hungry, it was still too early to go to a restaurant. So we decided to drink sweet cocktails in the hotel bar.

Immediately after a few sips, we could already feel the alcohol not only in our stomachs, but also in our heads.

But why bother? We are on the beautiful island and do not have to get up early the next morning, so why not relax to the fullest.

And here HE came in, dressed up all in white. Even being blind, it would be impossible not to feel his charm and charisma. He was with a few guys, as it turned out later, with his best friends. The most surprising was that, when they entered the bar, all the guys sat at the table next to ours and he walked straight up to our table and asked if we would like to join them. Just like that, so simply and directly, as if we were already familiar with each other.

If the same thing happened in New York, we’d definitely react differently. No idea what exactly affected us, the atmosphere of the island or the alcohol, but to our surprise, we agreed.

– Drinking alcohol without the company of man can be dangerous, – said one of the guys, when we joined them.

– Especially for such beauties, – added the other one.

– Oh, really? Somehow we didn’t realize it, – said Sue.

– What exactly, that you consume alcohol or that you are without a company of men? – asked the third guy.

– That it might be dangerous, – I intervened.

– Well, lovely creature, believe me, it is not quite safe. After all, men are like sharks, patiently waiting for their victims.

– Guys, stop it immediately. Your black humor can be misunderstood, and the girls might think we ourselves are those sharks, – said the guy who invited us to their table and introduced himself. – I am Alen. And these are my three best friends. We know each other almost from the cradle. This is Jonathan, and as you may have already noticed, he is a fan of black humor. This is Richard – he loves nature and birds, and he even writes a book about them. And this is Mathias. The thing that he enjoys the most in his life is food and cooking. We have a small tradition: every year we discover a new place for a vacation. Now it’s your turn.

– I am Adriane. And this is Susan. We are best friends since our school time. And this is our kind of honeymoon, – I blurted out before thinking what I was saying, which is quite typical for me.

When I finished the sentence, the guys’ faces got longer from surprise and disappointment. And then I realized what I had blurted out.

– Well, and as all of you may have noticed, Adri is also a big fan of the humor. We are not lesbians, who just got married.

One could see the ease on the guys’ faces.

– Well, not that we have anything against the minorities, but it would be a damn shame, if such beauties wouldn’t be interested in the opposite sex.

– By the way, about minorities, does anyone of you know what a legend says, I mean, where they come from? – Sue decided to show off her knowledge.

From the surprise the guys’ eyebrows crawled to their forehead.

– What? Is there even a legend how they appeared? Asked Alen.

– Of course there is, and it reads as follows: once upon a time, when the gods and the humans lived together on the earth, all the people were like Siamese twins, to be more exact, a man with a woman, a man with a man and a woman with a woman. These people were more powerful than the gods, and realizing their power, they started threatening the gods. Zeus decided to give them a lesson and his lightning split them in half. As a punishment, he scattered them all over the world, so that people would spend all their lives looking for their second halves. And apparently, the first female halves found each other on the island of Lesbos, and hence got their names.

All four of them turned to be a lot of fun and had great sense of humor, and that made the evening stunningly easy.

The bar turned to a restaurant and the restaurant in its turn – into a club.

But the feeling that we were together with complete strangers was absent, it felt as if we knew each other for the whole life.

Alen was the most charming guy I had ever met. He had unusually big eyes, in which one could draw in. I realized that I was losing control over my feelings. And the most horrible thing was that I couldn’t hide it.

It was about four in the morning, when we came back to our hotel room. Despite the fatigue, I couldn’t fall asleep for a long time. I was excited and spent nearly an hour in the bathroom. After sitting in a warm bath for good fifty minutes, I decided to get back to the bed with the hope that I would fall asleep. But another surprise was waiting for me – a beautiful bouquet of thirty – five snow white roses with a note: “Thank you for the unforgettably beautiful evening. Wish it would never end. With love. Alen”.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

– So-me-one is fal-l-ing in lo-ove, – Sue gave me a big smile with a flame in her eyes.

– Don’t be silly. I don’t even know him, – most of all, I was trying to convince myself than Sue.

– Adri, you can’t cheat me. Look at yourself; you are all glowing like a disco ball. And I like to see you happy, even though we have planned to have some fun without guys, because after all, it’s our honeymoon, – and we both burst into laughter.

There could be no consideration about falling asleep.
