About the Author

Dr. Brigitte S. Cypress is an Associate Professor at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Nursing, Camden. She received her Bachelor of Science nursing degree from Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines and her Master's degree in Adult Health from Lehman College, City University of New York. Her Doctor of Education degree in nursing is from Teachers College Columbia University, where she began her research program on the lived experience of patients, their family members, and nurses during critical illness.

Using phenomenological philosophy and methods in her research, she continuously conducts studies in critical care that values individuals, specifically the patient‐family–nurse relationship, which embraces a holistic approach to the person. Based on the findings of her phenomenological inquiries, she works to develop nursing knowledge essential to the art, philosophy, and practice of the profession, and of healthcare as a whole. She focuses on describing the utility and outcomes of her study findings, and linking them to evidence‐based practice, policy, and theory through concept analysis, evidence‐based reviews using “meaning questions,” and metasynthesis, including generating hypotheses to use in quantitative and mixed‐methods research. She believes that phenomenology‐as‐philosophy and a qualitative research approach are beneficial to qualitative nurse researchers and academicians. Phenomenology can help illuminate and clarify fundamental issues in healthcare through conducting studies into different phenomena evident in nursing practice in the form of lived experiences. As the science of nursing is concerned with treating individuals holistically, phenomenology plays a pivotal role in the profession because it values not only the individual's experience, but also the principles and modalities of their healing into daily life and clinical practice.

Dr. Brigitte Cypress’ was a professor of mine when I was studying for my PhD in Nursing at the Graduate Center City University of New York. Her passion for philosophy and phenomenological research was evident then, and it shows in her scholarly works. Dr. Brigitte Cypress is a mentor and educator to PhD students. When I embarked on using phenomenology as the philosophical approach for my dissertation, I called upon her scholarly expertise, and I am honored to have her on my committee.
