Оглавление

Commercialized PRSV-resistant transgenic papayas have been released in Hawaii, USA, and Guangdong, China. Another USA virus-resistant papaya (Florida) has been deregulated but commercialization agreements have not been finalized. While c.15 other laboratories have generated papayas with PRSV resistance and for other improved traits, e.g. delayed ripening, difficulties involving deregulation have curtailed the use of the transgenic papayas. Micropropagation has been commercially successful. Release of improved cultivars in the future will depend on breeding by marker-assisted selection utilizing papaya sequence data, mutation breeding, breeding with tolerant papaya accessions and exploitation of papaya relatives with genes for virus resistance, improved shelf life and cold tolerance. The Florida PRSV-tolerant ‘Cariflora’ has been adopted in several countries and has been hybridized with local lines to develop new cultivars.
