Painting the Santa

I paint this Santa using washes of acrylic paint. I use

small plastic containers from a hobby store to mix and

preserve my mixtures. For light colors and white, I

mix 8 parts water with 1 part paint. For darker colors,

I mix 15 parts water with 1 part paint. Always test

the paint on scrap wood to check the coverage. Add

a few split shot lead fishing sinkers to each container

to make it easier to mix together the water and paint.

Before painting, clean the carving. Dampen it, spray it

with Simple Green spray cleaner, lightly scrub it with a

small brush, rinse, and allow it to dry.

Paint the beard, eyebrows, and hair light ivory.

Paint the fur trim and scroll ivory, and the entire face

medium flesh. Let the paint dry before sealing the

project with Minwax wood finish natural #209. Allow

the finish to dry for a few days. Then, paint the coat

and mittens with two coats of Tompte red.

Thin 1 part charcoal paint with 15 parts water.

Further thin one small brush-load of the thinned paint

with a couple drops of water, and brush this wash over

the eyeball and eyelid cuts. Paint the entire eyeball

with slightly thinned soft white. Allow the white

to dry, and then paint the iris with slightly thinned

midnight blue. Position the iris slightly to the side. Add

a small dot of warm white as a highlight.

Apply a light wash of candy bar brown to the

separation cuts around the areas painted with Tompte

red. Use a thin wash of navy blue to shade most of the

non-red areas. For the skin, use a thin wash of adobe

red, especially on the nose and cheeks. To give the

entire carving a slightly frosty look, airbrush a very

thin wash of Liquitex iridescent rich gold over the

entire carving. When all of the paint is dry, seal the

carving with a couple coats of Deft satin spray finish.

MAKING TOOLS MORE VERSATILE

I wrap leather around the shafts of some larger

tools to make them more versatile. Not only can I

use them full size, but I can also grip them like a

palm tool. The full-size chisels also come in profiles

and sizes not available in palm tools. I attach strips

of suede leather

to the tools using

contact cement.
