T
he spiral bulb ornament may look
complicated, but it really requires the
mastery of just one skill—patience. If you
take your time, even the newest carver can
complete this ornament.
I enjoy carving hollow, or pierced-
through, carvings. My interest was inspired
by Carol Kent’s Twisted Spiral Ornament,
which was featured in
Woodcarving
Illustrated
Holiday 2005 (Issue 29). That was
the first piece I carved from a magazine, and
I carved several, making each one thinner
and more fragile. Since then I have designed
a new ornament each year. People seem
amazed by them, and I like to see my fellow
carvers’ reactions when they first see a
new design.
This spiral bulb ornament is more
difficult than some I’ve made in the past
because I remove a good bit of wood from
the center. The spiral has nine strands,
which worked well for me.
