Introduction

We are writing these words in precarious times. Images and heartbreaks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, George Floyd’s murder in Green Card Voices’ hometown of Minneapolis, and the ongoing racial tensions and civil unrest brought by the killing of Daniel Prude, an unarmed black man experiencing a mental health crisis at the hands of the police in Rochester, New York.1 These deaths have affected all of us and laid bare yet again the systemic oppression present in our communities. While we work tirelessly to respond to the immediate needs of our community, we are also committed—more than ever—to continue producing Green Card Voices books. We know that these stories matter deeply…and more than ever in this time. Our publishing work is an important contribution to the much-needed systems-level change, essential change, involving three key processes: thinking, leading, and collaborating systemically. By sharing stories and creating authentic immigrant-centered resources, we hope to pave the way for a more inclusive and supportive society, and in this critical moment, empower these immigrant youth authors and readers alike to address issues of racial inequity and develop deeper racial and cross-cultural understanding.
