Aims of this Book

Оглавление

This book will introduce you to young people living in the crossroads of the immigration debate—young immigrants who live and grow and plan for their futures even as an uncertain political climate and negative immigration rhetoric dominates our media, our politics, and, sometimes, our dinner table conversations. Young authors share their hopes and dreams, which so often include their desires to make the US a better place for all. Their aspirations should remind us of the achievements of earlier immigrants whose significant contributions shaped our country.

Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from Upstate New York High Schools is Green Card Voices’ sixth anthology of essays written by young immigrants. The first book, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was published in May 2016 and received a Gold Medal Award from the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. That collection serves as the template for our success. We recorded an additional 141 stories from young people in Fargo, North Dakota; St. Paul, Minnesota; Atlanta, Georgia; and Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin comprising five additional anthologies from these cities. With Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from Upstate New York High Schools, we travelled to the Northeastern US, specifically Rochester and Buffalo, where we worked to share the diverse stories of immigrants and refugees in this region of our country.

New York City is by far the largest city in New York state, followed by cities in its close proximity on Long Island, including Hempstead, Brookhaven, Islip, Oyster Bay, North Hempstead, and Babylon. Outside of those cities, Buffalo is the second largest city in the State of New York with a population of 255,284, followed closely by Rochester with 205,695 residents. Both of these cities have a rich and growing immigrant population.
