The beginning of the 21st century witnessed increasing interest in the development of MRI compatible guiding devices that could be used in either diagnostic or dedicated surgical MRI suites. In order to image the probe and monitor the probe trajectory during its insertion in the MRI suite, new devices compatible with high strength magnets evolved. For example, Starr et al. [48] described such a device as an alternative to more traditional stereotactic frames [29]. Accuracy and reliability data continue to accumulate. Refined methods to create heat lesions in the thalamus are under continued development using techniques, such as high intensity focused ultrasound [30].
