Blood was drawn from each patient before the first weekly hemodialysis session, and their clinical and laboratory data were recorded in our database. The baseline characteristics included: age (years), sex (male/female), number of diabetic patients, SBP (mm Hg), DBP (mm Hg), hemoglobin (g/dL) concentration, serum concentrations of albumin (g/dL), corrected Ca (mg/dL), P (mg/dL), magnesium (Mg; mg/dL), alkaline phosphatase (IU/L), intact PTH (pg/mL), and the numbers of patients administered an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent, renin-angiotensin system inhibitor, cinacalcet, or VDRA (oral or i.v.). Assays were performed using a standard biochemical analyzer (Hitachi 7810 Auto Analyzer, Tokyo, Japan). Intact PTH (normal range, 10–65 pg/mL) was measured by CLEIA using a commercial kit (Beckman Coulter, CA, USA), with a sensitivity of 1 pg/mL. Serum FGF23 was measured by a sandwich-type ELISA (Kainos, Tokyo, Japan) that detects the intact molecule.
