Several individuals in California formed a company to purchase multiple Gamma Knife units and house them next to the emerging diagnostic modality, then called NMR. Diagnosis and treatment would be next door neighbors. Money was put down, but the concept proved to be too ambitious, and they defaulted. Shortly after we signed the agreement for the Pittsburgh unit, the hospital was sued in Federal district court for “tortuous interference” in the NMR Center’s project. Fortunately, the federal district court was in Pittsburgh, and the suit was thrown out with prejudice in a matter of a few weeks.
