ICON
ОглавлениеThe most recent Elekta device took the basics of Perfexion and added a modification to include cone-beam CT technology. In certain cases this allowed the standard G frame to be replaced with a mask fixation system. This technology has thus far proven to be valuable in a subset of patients who are relaxed but not asleep (snoring sets off the motion detection system), and whose beam on plus cone-beam CT times are less than 30–40. The Elekta system was designed to fulfill Lars Leksell’s vision of a “wheels in to wheels out” surgical procedure performed in a single day; in the case of the brain, precision must be maintained. The potential value and use of staged radiosurgery or multiple fractions is under evaluation at ICON sites.
Shortly after installation, a pipe in the hospital’s ageing infrastructure burst, sending a volume of water 5 inches deep throughout the Perfexion and ICON suites. The quick response of our nurses and hospital personnel prevented permanent damage to the equipment. We were able to continue treating patients in the Perfexion unit over the next 3 months as the ICON suite had to be gutted and reconfigured.
