We agreed to serve as consultants to Elekta when they proposed a new Gamma Knife that would solve virtually all options to improve the technology. Among those was full robotics, no manual mode, and wider access to all areas of the brain, skull, and skull base, improved patient safety, including scattered dose reduction, patient comfort with a wider bed more suitable for American-type bodies. This represented a unique collaboration between industry and a brain trust of experienced and interested neurosurgeons, engineers, medical physicists, radiobiologists, and radiation oncologists. The first unit went to Marseille in France for installation. Our Perfexion device was installed in 2007.

After the installation of the Perfexion unit, the original U unit was decommissioned, unloaded, and scrapped. It had been in clinical and then research use for almost 20 years, with only one reloading. Practical, accurate, and robustly functional, the Pittsburgh U unit proved to be a device that incited more than 300 centers across the world to begin brain radiosurgery.
