Probiotics
ОглавлениеProbiotics have been reported to reduce GDM in a mixed cohort women of varying weights [64]. Probiotic supplementation for obese women in pregnancy has been explored in several randomized controlled trials, most still ongoing at present. The Probiotics in Pregnancy Study randomized 175 women with BMI 30.0–39.9 to a daily probiotic or placebo capsule from 24 until 28 weeks gestation, examining the change in fasting glucose. There was a difference in BMI between the treatment groups (probiotic 32.9 ± 2.4 kg/m2, placebo 34.1 ± 2.7). After adjustment for BMI, there was no difference in change in fasting glucose, birth weight, or other metabolic variables [65]. It is possible that the brevity of this intervention was the reason for the lack of effect seen, and the results of the SPRING study [66], HUMBA trial [67], and other trials from Denmark [68] and the United Kingdom [63] are awaited.
