The Indignant People’s Movement

Оглавление

The most visible social movement after the crisis broke out was the movement of the 'indignant people' gathering in the square in front of the Greek Parliament for three months between May and July 2011. Participants of the 'indignant' movement believed that all other channels of political expression and political participation were closed off to them and that the government had stopped listening to the people.

Demonstrators gathered daily on the square to protest the austerity measures of the government and to experiment with direct democracy (general assembly of all those present, local referenda). They disputed parliamentarianism, condemned the political class in its entirety, and tolerated some violence against politicians, when politicians and journalists, passing by the square, [69] were physically attacked (Kollia 2012, reporting field research by Vassiliki Georgiadou).
