The author has carried out research at the Spanish Ministry of Culture and at the Naval Archives in Madrid; as well as at the Archive of the Indies in Seville; and at the Natural History Museum in Paris.

Based in Chilean Patagonia, the author has spent a great deal of time studying and analyzing sources and this book is the fruit of six years of historical research on Patagonia, carried out in the Americas and Europe. The book covers the history of the region from discovery up to the European Conquest of the Patagonian region between the 16th and 19th centuries.

English Edition

I never imagined so much interest would be generated by this book. This first English edition incorporates more background information regarding boundaries and archaeological subjects, in particular on Monte Verde, which is the most significant archaeological site discovered in recent times. A few facts and dates have been corrected, and maps and drawings have been added, along with their relevant sources. For example, the map on the front cover is taken from Frederic Lacroix's book 'A History of Patagonia,' published in 1841, and drawn by the French cartographer A. Jenotte.

To help visualize the historical boundaries of Patagonia, Alberto Montt colored the map for Editorial Patagonia Media in 2007, in accordance with the information provided in Lacroix's book.
