FIRES OF 1947
ОглавлениеIn mid-October 1947, after a hot, dry summer and fall, wildfires broke out on Mount Desert Island. Ten days later they were under control, but not until more than 17,000 acres (6900 hectares), 170 homes, and 5 historic hotels had burned. Not an isolated event, fires claimed an additional 180,000 acres (73,000 hectares) in other parts of Maine that year. While devastating at the time, Acadia’s forest today is healthier and more diverse as a result—benefiting natural beauty and wildlife.
