RUSTICATORS AND ARTISTS

Оглавление

In the mid-1800s, Mount Desert Island transformed, becoming a growing haven for so-called rusticators: wealthy families in search of summer retreats, inspired by painters and writers who had captured the region’s beauty. By the 1880s, a time of significant economic growth in the United States, some of the country’s most noteworthy and successful business leaders had established permanent summer “cottages” on the island. The Rockefellers, Morgans, Fords, Vanderbilts, Carnegies, and Astors were some of the notable families who built large estates in this era.
