Go West! …Those of you who are keeping track of chronology might ask yourselves what the Homestead ActHomestead Act is doing in a section entitled ReconstructionReconstruction since the first Homestead Act was passed at the height of the Civil War, namely in 1862. The greatest impact of this legislation, however, wouldn’t take place until almost a half century later when a vast amount of land was literally given away [47]by the government. You may have heard the saying “Go west” in other contexts; the full sentence, “Go west, young man, and grow up with the country” was first made popular by the journalist and politician Horace GreeleyGreeley, Horace and symbolized the promise of a new beginning that some thought the open plains would provide.
