The word “contemporary” means “at the same time”; you might want to argue that “contemporary AmericaAmerica” should be restricted to what’s happening in the US this month or this year or this decade. Since history becomes more difficult to make sense of the closer history is to us – like someone who’s farsighted can only see things clearly that are further away – let’s begin contemporary America a bit further in the past, with the something very new for America.
