PRÓLOGO Foreword

Оглавление

This is an impressive volume of historical statistics. Not only have the authors taken great care in collecting and presenting the data here, but they explain at length their sources, pointing out strengths and weaknesses of each time series. The appearance of Chile 1810-2010: La República en Cifras contributes to a major watershed. Although the authors have been collecting the data reported here for some time, its publication makes Chile one of the first Latin American countries to have such a comprehensive historical statistics volume. It all started with the US Department of Commerce’s Historical Statistics of the United States: 1789-1945 (1949) followed by Phyllis Deane and Brian Mitchell’s Abstract of British Historical Statistics (1962). The appearance of Chile 1810-2010 is consistent with the country’s social science leadership and intense public policy interest. One can only hope that more Latin American countries will follow Chile’s lead so as to sharpen our understanding of economic and social change since Independence in the region.
