Emphasis on Cultural Proficiency and Equity
ОглавлениеDiversity is a reality in all schools. The question is not if Data Teams deal with diversity. The question is how. Examining data (especially demographic, achievement, and disaggregated data) frequently surfaces negative assumptions about what children of color, students with exceptional needs, or students living in poverty are capable of learning and achieving. Educators using data can disintegrate into destructive conflict around these issues or engage in constructive dialogue.
The Using Data Process incorporates several features to help Data Teams and the Data Coach address diversity constructively and maintain a focus on equity. In Task 3, the Data Team studies principles of cultural proficiency and a framework for understanding a range of responses to diversity. In subsequent tasks, we provide guidance on how to facilitate constructive dialogue about diversity issues that will likely surface in the specific tasks. Throughout the process, the Data Coach and the team are reminded to view data through an Equity Lens, seeking diverse voices and perspectives and keeping their eye on the goal of serving all students equitably.
